Berlengas Archipelago
Berlengas Archipelago
Accessible only by boat, the Berlengas Archipelago consists of three islands: Berlenga Grande, Estelas and the Farilhões, the perfect place to get in touch with nature in all its splendor.
The best guarantee of the natural virtues of the Berlengas and their natural importance is the particularity of the archipelago having been distinguished as a Nature Reserve by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) and having been classified in 2011 by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.
In Berlengas you can get in touch with a rich fauna and flora, with incomparable plant and animal species and natural scenery that you can only find here.
However, the interest of the Berlengas, namely the Berlenga Grande, the only one that can be visited, is not limited to its biological component – it is also the ideal place to make pleasant walks or the beach, at Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro (unattended).
If you like heritage and history, the Berlengas also have some good surprises for you to visit such as the always imposing Lighthouse of Duque de Bragança and the Fort of São João Baptista, part of the defensive complex of Peniche during the Restoration Portuguese Independence Day (1640-1656) vis-à-vis Spanish rule.
Sleep in Berlengas
At the Forte, it is also possible to stay overnight as long as the proper reservation is safeguarded, still in Peniche, at the Associação Amigos da Berlenga. If you like camping, there is also a park for that purpose and it is even possible to take boat trips to the caves.
Since 2015, there has been a Visitor Center in Berlengas, an infrastructure that allows all those who visit the archipelago to find a space for the dignified visitor and at the same time to find information about the archipelago.
Take advantage of the visit to the city of Peniche to take a leap (or the other way around, you decide …) to the islands, and you will certainly have a full day to remember later!
