The beginning of the construction of the Cabo Carvoeiro Lighthouse, a 27 meter high tower, dates from the Pombaline license of 1758, together with six other similar infrastructures in other parts of the country that represented the foundation of the Lighthouse Service in Portugal.
The Carvoeiro Cape Lighthouse History
The Carvoeiro Cape Lighthouse started operating in 1790, making it one of the oldest in Portugal and thus one of the most important testimonies of this type of construction and its functionalities.
In spite of everything, and due to the passing of the years and some signs of wear and need for renovation, the Cabo Carvoeiro Lighthouse was completely remodeled at the end of the 19th century, so that it could continue to perform effectively the functions for which it was built more than 250 years ago.
At the end of the 80s of the 20th century, the optical system was automated, giving the equipment greater efficiency in the range and a reduction in its consumption, allowing it to continue to be a national reference in this type of equipment.
In the 21st century, its system was again modernized and a DGPS station (Differential GPS) started operating at a frequency of 311.5 KHZ.
