Municipal Museum of Peniche
Municipal Museum of Peniche
Inaugurated in 1984, the Municipal Museum of Peniche is installed in the Peniche Fort, its main mission being the promotion and dissemination of the county’s history and heritage.
At the same time, it seeks to assert itself as a place where the municipality of Peniche can be interpreted in the historical, social, economic and artistic aspects, and for this reason it is an area of exaltation of the Penichense identity.
The Municipal Museum of Peniche focuses on themes indispensable to the local identity, such as fishing, shipbuilding, activities intrinsically linked to Peniche’s economic development, the Bilros lace, one of the traditional arts of the local inhabitants, but also addresses the anti-fascist resistance due to the use of Forte de Peniche as a political prison during the dictatorship that prevailed during the Estado Novo period (1933-1974).
Featured figures at the Municipal Museum of Peniche
The Municipal Museum of Peniche gives special prominence to the architect from São Paulo, Paulino Montês, one of the illustrious figures of the municipality, who stood out in the 20th century, having carried out works of national, local and regional scope. Some of Paulino Montês’ works can be seen not only in Peniche but also in the neighboring towns of Caldas da Rainha and Foz do Arelho.
Given the diversity of themes exposed there and the importance they assume for the local community, if you want to get to know the municipality of Peniche better, the Museum is a must see.
We also emphasize that the fact that this museum space is installed in the Fort of Peniche allows the interest in visiting the museum the interest in visiting the fort itself, also an important heritage element in the history not only of Peniche but of the country, especially in the period of the Restoration of Independence (1640-1656) Portuguese “vis-à-vis” the Spanish domain.
For all these reasons, the visit to the Museum is a unique opportunity that you will not want to miss.
There you will get to know more and better Peniche and its people!
