Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church
Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church
The Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church in the Atouguia da Baleia was built at the end of the 17th century, with the help of the alms of the people and with the support of Queen D. Sofia Sofia of Neuburgo, second wife of King D. Pedro II.
The history of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church is linked to a miracle that occurred with an image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição and that motivated the construction of this temple, an imposing example of Mannerist and Baroque architecture, by João Nunes.
Important for religious and social reasons, the architectural and artistic virtues of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição are also worth mentioning and certainly contributed largely to the building being classified as a Public Interest Building, in 1962.
From an artistic point of view
From an artistic point of view, the use of marble of different shades deserves to be highlighted, with special attention being paid to the twisted colonnade of the altarpiece and the medallions of the ceiling and walls.
The gilded carving of the altar also stands out as a decorative element as well as the holy water sinks in marble.
An important testament to the identity and local heritage, he recently underwent conservation and restoration works in order to minimize some signs of degradation that time was imposing on him.
For historical, social and artistic reasons it is part of the religious heritage that integrates the Route of the Churches of the Council of Peniche, being a mandatory stop of the same.
Certainly an attraction that you will not want to miss!
