Misericórdia Church in Peniche

The Misericórdia Church in Peniche dates from the 17th century, although it suffered significant damage in the following century, caused by the 1755 Earthquake.

As a result of the earthquake, the church was subsequently requalified.

In the 19th century, it was the target of several conservation and restoration interventions in an attempt to safeguard the building and all the associated memory, this being a heritage of not only religious but also social importance for the surrounding community.

The importance of the Church in Peniche was recognized when, in the 20th century, it received the transfer of the grave of D. Luis de Ataide, 3rd Count of Atouguia and Lord of Peniche, Viceroy of India in the 16th century, one of the most distinguished personalities of the time.
