Santo Estêvão Chapel
Santo Estêvão Chapel
Built on the Baleal peninsula, the Santo Estêvão Chapel, Peniche is over 400 years old, and is built on one end of the peninsula, providing, in addition to everything else, a pleasant view over the sea and over Peniche.
Small in size, the Chapel is yet another example of the religious architecture of the municipality of Peniche, having recently undergone refurbishment works, thus allowing the history, memory as well as the valuable decoration of this chapel to be preserved.
The recognition of its historical, artistic and social value was enshrined with the selection of the Chapel of Santo Estêvão as another religious heritage to be included in the Route of the Churches of the Municipality of Peniche.
This is an important example of the heritage and local identity that has reached our days and deserves to be visited with the interior decoration as the most important points.
Santo Estêvão Chapel Details
From the point of view of its artistic virtues, we call your attention to the tile coverings of the 17th and 18th century and to the ceiling lined with wood and painted with religious episodes.
Situated very close to the famous Baleal beaches, where thousands of vacationers occur during the bathing season, whether that is your case or not, take the opportunity to take a peek at this ancient religious testimony.
The Chapel still has the curiosity of being venerated there, not only Santo Estêvão but also Nossa Senhora das Mercês.
Still in the parish of Ferrel, while taking a break from the beach, you can also visit the Chapel of Ferrel and take the opportunity to get to know other parishes and their heritage.
Religious celebrations at the Chapel take place during the month of August, every Monday and Saturday, at 9 am and 7 pm and also on Sundays at 9 am, 12 pm and 7 pm.
