São Bernardino de Sena Convent

The São Bernardino de Sena Convent in Peniche was built in the middle of the 15th century, with the creation of the Franciscan Hermitage, and has had a busy life with many stories to tell.

In the following century it was totally rebuilt from the ground up, in a new higher place, following a flood.

Later, already in the 18th century, it was the target of pirate attacks.

After the Pirates

In the 1980s of the 19th century, it was reacquired and started to house the College of Humanities until the order of closure of the Franciscan convents at the beginning of the 20th century.

As of 1927, it received a correctional colony for women, the first existing in the country, which would later be renamed Instituto de Reeducação in 1967, Centro Escolar in 1975 and Colégio de São Bernardino in 1995.

The building was rehabilitated in the 90’s and in addition to the old convent building that houses the boarding school today, the church and the entire old fence still remain.

The constant interventions in the building, as well as the functions that have been attributed to it, guarantee the importance, the equipment and a legacy with centuries of identity and history.

Whether for historical reasons or for the social importance of the activities that have been held there, the Convent of São Bernardino de Sena is an important element of local identity.

There, the Saint Bernardino festivals are celebrated in May and August, which are yet another reason why you can and should visit this space!

In addition, Atouguia da Baleia has many other attractions such as the ruins of the Castle, the Cruise, several churches and the Pillory … there is no shortage to choose from!
