Duque de Bragança Lighthouse in Berlengas

The Duque de Bragança Lighthouse in Berlengas had its first version, by Pombaline license, in 1758, a project by the architect Gaudêncio Fontana.

It is one of the oldest infrastructures of its kind in Portugal, and is therefore a testament to the importance of assistance to navigation in a land of fishermen and in a country of navigators.

In 1836, the Duque de Bragança Lighthouse was again built with a 29 meter high tower, restarting its functions in 1842, and undergoing further remodeling at the end of the same century.

It was automated in the 80s of the 20th century, modernizing its equipment and making it more efficient. In 2000, solar panels were installed, running the entire complex on solar energy. This particularity earned the Duque de Bragança Lighthouse the attribution of the National Defense and Environment Award due to the good environmental practices introduced with the modifications of the previous year.
