São Sebastião Church, Peniche

The São Sebastião Church in Peniche dates back to the 17th century and follows the Mannerist architectural style, making it a fine example of the rich religious heritage you can find throughout the municipality.

Located in the village of Serra d’El Rei, São Sebastião Church is the local parish church and therefore a meaningful place for the community, as well as a heritage landmark that reflects the importance and age of Serra d’El Rei.

The interior of São Sebastião Church is richly decorated and is its main highlight, so we recommend taking your time to look around.

Artistically, the most remarkable features are the 18th-century blue and white tile panels depicting scenes from the life of Saint Sebastian. There are more tiles in the main chapel that you should not miss either.

Another highlight inside the church is the gilded woodwork decorating the main altar, which stands out strikingly and gives the interior great grandeur.

The wood-panelled ceiling also adds character to São Sebastião Church, setting off the tile panels and the gleaming gilded woodwork.

Thanks to its importance and the artistic richness of its interior, São Sebastião Church is an important witness to the history of Serra d’El Rei and is part of the Churches Route of the Municipality of Peniche, a religious heritage trail you should not miss.

Religious services are held on Wednesdays at 7 pm and on Sundays at 9 am. Until then, enjoy your visits and your trips around the West region.
