Nossa Senhora da Consolação Church
Nossa Senhora da Consolação Church, Peniche
Built in the 17th century, Nossa Senhora da Consolação Church in Peniche was designed by the military engineer Estêvão Luís.
Its size is explained by the large number of pilgrims who came for the Círios de Freiria (from Torres Vedras) and of Gradil (from Mafra), showing that the church and the place where it stands mattered not only to locals but also to the many visitors who travelled there.
As is often the case with this kind of church, its importance goes well beyond its history and its place in the community.
What to see
As in many other cases, Nossa Senhora da Consolação Church also stands out for its artistic treasures, which you should not miss.
While the exterior is fairly plain, the interior has decoration that will certainly catch your eye, above all the blue and white tile panels with episodes from the life of Our Lady of the Conception, an artistic testimony to the importance of the church and its patron saint.
Because of its importance on several levels, Nossa Senhora da Consolação Church is another example of religious heritage on the Churches Route of the Municipality of Peniche that you should not miss!
You can also visit the rest of Atouguia da Baleia’s heritage, such as the ruins of the Castle, the Cruise and the Pillory, as well as its rich churches, especially the most emblematic one, São Leonardo.
From 1 June to 30 September, services are held every day at 7 pm, with an additional service on Sundays at 9 am.
